{"id":955,"date":"2012-01-20T18:36:44","date_gmt":"2012-01-21T00:36:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iowappa.com\/?p=955"},"modified":"2012-01-20T18:40:44","modified_gmt":"2012-01-21T00:40:44","slug":"lead-is-poison-coalition-ammunition-myth-vs-reality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iowappa.com\/?p=955","title":{"rendered":"\u201cLead Is Poison Coalition: Ammunition Myth vs. Reality\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/iowappa.com\/?attachment_id=156\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-156\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-156\" title=\"webeagle\" src=\"https:\/\/iowappa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/webeagle2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iowappa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/webeagle2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/iowappa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/webeagle2.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Myth:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 The DNR overstepped its bounds in attempting to prohibit the use of lead shot.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Reality:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 It was not the Department that filed the Notice of Intended Action, but the Natural Resources Commission.\u00a0 \u201cExcept as otherwise provided by law, the commission shall: a. Establish policy and adopt rules, pursuant to chapter 17A. . . [and the] commission may adopt rules for the taking and possession of migratory birds which are subject to the federal &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fws.gov\/migratorybirds\/RegulationsPolicies\/mbta\/mbtintro.html\">Migratory Bird Treaty Act<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;Migratory Bird Stamp Hunting Act&#8221; during the time and in the manner permitted under those federal Acts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NRC has introduced similar rules in the past without objection.\u00a0 <em>See<\/em> IAC r. 571\u2014Chapter 92, particularly subrule 92.3, which requires nontoxic shot for migratory game birds.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Myth:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 Steel shot costs twice as much as lead shot.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Reality:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 In April, 2011, Winchester 12 gauge #7 steel shot cost $5.97 a box at a Carroll, Iowa Wal-Mart.\u00a0 In the same aisle was a Winchester 12 gauge #7 \u00bd lead shot for the same price &#8211; $5.97 per box. \u00a0Both boxes contained shells that were 2 \u00be inches, 1180 to 1200 FPS.\u00a0 The lead shot was 2 \u00be dram while the steel shot was 3 dram.\u00a0 The price and availability of alternative shot is becoming more in tune to demand.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Myth:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 This rule was adopted at the last minute and the Commission tried to sneak it through.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Reality<\/em><\/strong>:\u00a0 The Natural Resource Commission was discussing this issue at every meeting (monthly) going back to late 2010.\u00a0 Unlike the Iowa Legislature that used a sneaky maneuver within a 24-hour period to instantly change a bill about raccoon hunting into \u201cmourning dove\u201d hunting.\u00a0 The Administrative Rules Review Committee was displeased with the prohibition on lead shot, but did nothing to nullify the portion of the rule incorporating the \u201cEurasian collared-dove\u201d, which was added to the intended action at the same time and in the same manner as the lead shot prohibition.\u00a0 There is nothing sneaky about it.\u00a0 The Commission responded to public comments, which is exactly what it is supposed to do.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Myth:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 Non-toxic shot is not as accurate.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Reality:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 This is an opinion.\u00a0 There is no scientific study that proves this.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Myth:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 Steel shot is harder on the guns than lead shot.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Reality:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 It is possible that barrel damage may occur if the hunter is using an older gun or using a really tight choke.\u00a0 Use a more open choke for steel.\u00a0 One suggestion is to \u201cchange to an improved cylinder or skeet choke.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cNon-toxic shot is now also available for safe use in vintage and older shotguns (Cabela\u2019s 2008)\u201d Citing Tranel, M.A., AND R. Kimmel.\u00a0 2009.\u00a0 Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Study, Impacts of Lead Ammunition on Wildlife, the Environment and Human Health \u2013 A Literature Review and Implications for Minnesota.\u201d P. 9.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Myth:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 These anti-lead people are trying to outlaw hunting.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Reality:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leadispoison.com\/\">Lead Is Poison Coalition<\/a> is an unincorporated nonprofit organization that includes many hunters.\u00a0 LIP-C is concerned about our future, our environment, public health, and our wildlife and humans.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Myth:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve never seen so many eagles.\u00a0 Lead is not a threat to raptors and scavengers.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Reality:\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Lead is toxic; lead kills eagles, vultures, hawks, and other raptors.\u00a0 It\u2019s easily preventable by using alternative shot.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/local\/137358413.html\">http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/local\/137358413.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Myth:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 There are no scientific studies that lead is a problem to the environment, humans, or wildlife.\u00a0 If they do exist, the studies are 15 to 20 years old.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Reality:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 All the scientific studies you can imagine are included in a Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Study, \u201c<em>Impacts of Lead Ammunition on Wildlife, the Environment and Human Health \u2013 A Literature Review and Implications for Minnesota<\/em>\u201d, published recently (2009).\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leadispoison.com\/uploads\/307Tranel.pdf\">http:\/\/www.leadispoison.com\/uploads\/307Tranel.pdf<\/a> \u00a0\u201cThe literature review includes more than 500 citations on lead and non-toxic ammunition-related issues worldwide.\u201d\u00a0 Another recent and excellent source of scientific data comes from the Oklahoma cooperative Extension Service, a Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at Oklahoma State University.\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/pods.dasnr.okstate.edu\/docushare\/dsweb\/Get\/Document-7144\/NREM-9015web.pdf\">http:\/\/pods.dasnr.okstate.edu\/docushare\/dsweb\/Get\/Document-7144\/NREM-9015web.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Myth:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 Steel shot will only maim birds and make them suffer.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Reality:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 A study by J. H. Schulz, et al., [2006b.\u00a0 \u201c<em>Will Mourning Dove crippling rates increase with nontoxic-shot regulations?<\/em>\u201d\u00a0 Wildlife Society Bulletin 34(3), 861-864] \u201cevaluated crippling rates in waterfowl prior to and following implementation of non-toxic shot regulations in the US.\u00a0 They found that, \u201cafter a five-year phase-in-period, crippling rates for ducks and geese were lower after non-toxic shot restrictions were implemented.\u201d\u00a0 Tranel, et. al., P. 9.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lead is toxic; lead kills eagles, vultures, hawks, and other raptors.
