On my daily walk that I take at least three to four times a week, a turkey hen crossed the path ahead of me. As I approached the area where I saw the turkey cross the path (to get to the other side), a tom turkey flew up out of the brush, and at an altitude of approximately twelve feet, flew into the woods to the east. Immediately afterwards, the hen I had seen earlier, flew up to an altitude of approximately twelve feet and flew to the west.<\/p>\n

Of course, I know that domesticated turkeys cannot fly. \u201cFarmers wanted bigger and fatter birds producing more meat. Today\u2019s domesticated turkeys are unable to fly due to their size.\u201d They are especially inept at flying out of helicopters.<\/p>\n

Could a wild turkey fly out of a helicopter? Well, that depends. A wild turkey can fly long enough to get away from danger and can make it to a tree branch not too far off the ground. But being dropped out of helicopter is a different story. A wild turkey will flap its wings until it realizes it may need to attempt floating. It will probably make it to the ground without too much damage, but the stress could also kill it.<\/p>\n

Domesticated turkeys have white feathers and are produced to have large breasts and legs. A wild turkey will have dark but colorful plumage and can fly up to 55 mph. Wild turkeys are much smaller than their white counterparts, and taste gamier.<\/p>\n

The turkey you eat at Thanksgiving may weigh more than twenty-five to thirty pounds before being processed. However, their wild cousins might weigh about five pounds at the same age.<\/p>\n

Like the turkeys, I would rather live in the forest as opposed to a facility with thousands more stuffed into the building. Does that make me wild? It makes me free, and that\u2019s enough.<\/p>\n
