{"id":2137,"date":"2023-02-13T18:40:14","date_gmt":"2023-02-14T00:40:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iowappa.com\/?p=2137"},"modified":"2023-02-13T18:40:14","modified_gmt":"2023-02-14T00:40:14","slug":"death-penalty-bill-moving-in-iowa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iowappa.com\/?p=2137","title":{"rendered":"Death Penalty Bill Moving in Iowa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Update on Senate File 14<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>A subcommittee meeting on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/legislation\/BillBook?ga=90&amp;ba=sf14\">Iowa Senate File 14<\/a> will be held this week on Wednesday, February 15, at 1:00 pm in Room 315 of the Iowa Capitol.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/legislation\/BillBook?ga=90&amp;ba=sf14\">Senate File 14<\/a>, if enacted the bill would create a \u201ccapital murder offense by establishing the penalty of death for murder in the first-degree offenses involving kidnapping and sexual abuse offenses against the same victim who is a minor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Senate Subcommittee consists of Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/legislators\/legislator?ga=90&amp;personID=9404\">Julian Garrett<\/a> (R-Indianola); Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/legislators\/legislator?ga=90&amp;personID=906\">Tony Bisignano<\/a> (D-Des Moines); and Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/legislators\/legislator?ga=90&amp;personID=6588\">Jason Schultz<\/a> (R-Schleswig). If your legislator responds with \u201cI don\u2019t think there will be a death penalty bill debate this year,\u201d or some similar reply, let them know that that is not the question you asked. Ask again: \u201cWould you oppose any bill in the Iowa Legislature that reinstated the death penalty?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You are the constituent; you are the legislator\u2019s boss; the person to whom the legislator is elected to represent. You have every right to expect a definitive answer. Be respectful nice, but firm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More information<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Iowans Against the Death Penalty is a single-issue organization established in 1962. We were instrumental in the repeal of the state\u2019s death penalty law in 1965, and IADP has worked vigilantly to resist efforts to reinstate it over the years.<\/p>\n<p>Funds are necessary to run any organization.
