{"id":1950,"date":"2021-06-22T10:48:25","date_gmt":"2021-06-22T15:48:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iowappa.com\/?p=1950"},"modified":"2021-06-22T10:48:25","modified_gmt":"2021-06-22T15:48:25","slug":"octopuses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iowappa.com\/?p=1950","title":{"rendered":"Octopuses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iowappa.com\/?attachment_id=150\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-150\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-150\" src=\"https:\/\/iowappa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/webeagle-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iowappa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/webeagle-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/iowappa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/webeagle.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>When I was child in St. Ann\u2019s Grade School, John Fitzgerald Kennedy was running to become the President of the United States.\u00a0 JFK was a Catholic, just like Joe Biden.\u00a0 The nuns, the priests, and most Catholics I knew got behind JFK and supported his candidacy, and eventually, his presidency.<\/p>\n<p>I heard the concerns.\u00a0 \u2018He will be taking orders from the Pope.\u2019\u00a0 \u2018All laws will come from the Catholic Church.\u2019\u00a0 Protestants were scared that the Pope, the bishops, and priests would be running the country, and that they might be persecuted.\u00a0 None of that happened.<\/p>\n<p>However, here we are, sixty years later, and instead of celebrating another president of the Catholic Faith, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is condemning President Biden because he doesn\u2019t follow the religion\u2019s position on abortion in his political life, although he does oppose abortion in his personal life.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/06\/18\/politics\/catholic-bishops-biden\/index.html\">By a vote of 168 \u2013 55<\/a>, \u201cthe bishops went forward with plans for a report on the meaning of the Eucharist in the church.\u201d The report will be a part of a long process in which President Biden \u201cand other Catholic politicians who support abortion rights\u201d may be eventually rebuked.\u00a0 In the Church, rebuke means censure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis movement is driven by the extremely conservative wing of the Catholic Church.\u201d\u00a0 There should be no conservative wing of the Catholic Church.\u00a0 There should be no liberal wing.\u00a0 Jesus is simple.\u00a0 Feed the poor, heal the sick, be kind. \u00a0Jesus taught forgiveness, peace, and love of one\u2019s self and others \u2013 not just those who think and act like you.\u00a0 And Jesus warned his followers that they should not be quick to judge (like the bishops).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cDo not judge, or you too will be judged.\u00a0For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.\u201d\u00a0 Matthew 7:1-2<\/p>\n<p>The Catholic Church also opposes capital punishment.\u00a0 It is hypocritical that some priests will refuse to offer communion to a politician who is pro-choice, but piously give it to the politician who supports and introduces legislation to enhance or establish the death penalty.\u00a0 There are far too many of the latter.<\/p>\n<p>I graduated from a Catholic High School.\u00a0 That same school will ask me once a year to help financially support its mission to teach adolescents about Catholicism and Jesus\u2019 word.\u00a0 I refuse to contribute.\u00a0 It is painful to know that a vast majority of students that came from that school, my class and beyond, were taught well that abortion is a sin, and all Catholics should oppose it.\u00a0 Supposedly, the school did not give the same weight to the death penalty.\u00a0 Those same alumni that have lectured me on the evils of abortion [I have been called a baby killer by a few] support the death penalty, unequivocally.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. bishops should not be making policy that allows individual priests or bishops to determine the cleanliness of a communion recipient\u2019s soul or the conscience of her mind.\u00a0 Where does this lead?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce we legitimate public policy-based Eucharistic exclusion as a regular part of our teaching office \u2014 and that is the road to which we are headed \u2014 we will invite all of the political animosities that so tragically divide our nation into the very heart of the Eucharistic celebration,\u201d . . . That sacrament which seeks to make us one will become for millions of Catholics a sign of division.\u201d\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/18\/us\/targeting-biden-catholic-bishops-advance-controversial-communion-plan.html\">Bishop Robert W.
