{"id":1738,"date":"2020-01-07T19:43:19","date_gmt":"2020-01-08T01:43:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iowappa.com\/?p=1738"},"modified":"2020-01-07T19:43:19","modified_gmt":"2020-01-08T01:43:19","slug":"living-by-the-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iowappa.com\/?p=1738","title":{"rendered":"Living by the river"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Yes,\nit\u2019s January.&nbsp; Nonetheless, it\u2019s a good\ntime to get out and walk, especially if you live by the river, like we do.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yesterday,\nJanuary 6<sup>th<\/sup>, we saw 15 eagles on a two-mile stretch of the Des Moines\nRiver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"404\" height=\"441\" src=\"https:\/\/iowappa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/20200107_112252_Burst01-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1739\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iowappa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/20200107_112252_Burst01-1.jpg 404w, https:\/\/iowappa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/20200107_112252_Burst01-1-275x300.jpg 275w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 404px) 100vw, 404px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginning at the\nEuclid Avenue bridge east of River Place, and going south along the Trestle to\nTrestle Trail, we saw only two eagles.&nbsp;\nHowever, once we walked over the Inter-Urban Trail Trestle, less than a\nquarter of a mile down river, we began to see an eagle almost every 300\nfeet.&nbsp; We did not see the same eagle\ntwice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\nmet a man on the trail coming from down river and were excited to tell him that\nwe had seen eight eagles at that time.&nbsp;\nHe mentioned that on the day before [Monday] there were approximately 20\neagles behind a shed on 6<sup>th<\/sup> Avenue above the river bridge.&nbsp; Not too long after we stopped to chat with\nhim, we saw our remaining seven eagles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/iowappa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Eagles-cropped-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1740\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iowappa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Eagles-cropped-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/iowappa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Eagles-cropped-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/iowappa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Eagles-cropped-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/iowappa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Eagles-cropped.jpg 1420w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday, Stephanie walked the 3-mile round trip from River Place, 2309 Euclid Ave., under the General Marcellus Crocker Memorial Bridge on the west side of the river, south along the Trestle to Trestle Trail, across the Inter-Urban Trail Bridge, around the bend and south again on the Neal Smith Trail until it connects with an unnamed trail heading north toward McRae Park.\u00a0 At that point, Stephanie saw 5 eagles &#8211; 3 adults and 2 juveniles &#8211;  sitting in a tree (<em>photo above<\/em>) along the west side of a man-made pond adjacent to the location where Riverside Park once sat, and is again being turned into an amusement park.\u00a0 On Tuesday, we saw two, but there were several across the river from us on the south shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\nwish the photos were better.&nbsp; The pictures\nwere taken by an iPhone and an Android. &nbsp;Obviously,\nthe best way to see these majestic birds is to follow our footsteps.&nbsp; Noon is the best time of day, and the weather\nshould be great for the rest of the week for viewing.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\ncan actually get right underneath them.&nbsp;\nHowever, that\u2019s not a great location.&nbsp;\nIf you\u2019ve ever seen eagle whitewash, you would understand.&nbsp; You will notice some on the trail if you go.&nbsp; For those of you who live too far from Des\nMoines or the Des Moines River, trust us, this is an amazing sight to see.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yes, it\u2019s January.&nbsp; Nonetheless, it\u2019s a good time to get out and walk, especially if you live by the river, like we do.&nbsp; Yesterday, January 6th, we saw 15 eagles on a two-mile stretch of the Des Moines River.
