\"webeagle\"<\/a>The Reformer<\/i><\/b> is \u201cThe Official Inmate Newsletter Of The Iowa State Penitentiary\u201d in Fort Madison, Iowa.\u00a0 The newsletter is put together by inmates and is produced somewhere between quarterly and monthly.<\/p>\n

A letter-to-the-editor caught my attention in this past issue.\u00a0 We\u2019re reproducing here just as it was printed in the newsletter:<\/p>\n

LETTER TO THE EDITOR:<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 My name is Jesse Brown, and I am serving a sentence of life without the possibility of parole.\u00a0 I am writing this letter in solidarity with thousands of other men and women imprisoned all across this country asking that you stop supporting the sentence of life without the possibility of parole as an acceptable alternative to the death penalty.<\/p>\n

\u201cLife \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0without \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0possibility \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0of \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0parole \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0is \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cDeath \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Penalty.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I know that many death penalty advocate groups believe that it is not politically viable to seek to stop all forms of the death penalty.\u00a0 Many of these groups don\u2019t believe that life without parole is essentially a death sentence.\u00a0 They are wrong . . .<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 According to many studies, support for the death penalty continues to shrink.\u00a0 The public is more and more accepting of the proposition that rehabilitation is a real possibility and is an acceptable punishment.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you believe executing humans is wrong, then condemning them to a long slow death in prison must also be wrong.\u00a0 And yes, a long slow death is the death penalty.\u00a0 To argue otherwise is morally disingenuous at best.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Why not adopt a true and complete opposition to the death penalty?\u00a0 Why not argue in favor of humanity?\u00a0 Why not move forward with the times and stop fighting with out-molded [sic] positions on behalf of the more than 4,000 men and women sentenced to die.\u00a0 By meaningful incarceration I ask that you and your organizations adopt a consistent opposition to all forms of the death penalty.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Please break the silence and let all our voices be heard.\u00a0 \u201cNo effort gets No results\u201d<\/p>\n
